Lexiong Ying

"Lexiong Ying, born in Shanghai and based in London, is an interdisciplinary artist working across various visual media. She holds a Master of Arts in Data Visualisation from the University of the Arts London and a bachelor's degree in Fashion Design with Marketing. Her work has been exhibited in London, Düsseldorf, Paris, and Barcelona and featured in multiple media outlets.

Drawing from personal experiences and a keen awareness of societal shifts, Lexiong explores themes such as the fragility of human relationships, the illusions of consumerism, ecological consciousness, and animal welfare. She also addresses the challenges of female entrepreneurs and examines technology's impact on modern life. Her distinctive visual language encourages reflection on the complex dynamics between individuals and their environments.

Beyond her artistic endeavours, Lexiong practices fortune-telling, blending ancient wisdom with contemporary insights. This integration enriches her multidisciplinary approach and adds a deeper philosophical dimension to her work."

The Hypocritical Us, 1920*1080, Short Video, 2020

"We relentlessly partake in insincere social interactions driven by the pursuit of personal gain or achieving hidden objectives. Beneath the veneer of mutual praise, we subtly reinforce our social standing and project our perceived value, perpetuating a cycle of superficial affirmation."

Plastic Human Relations, A3, Experimental Photography, 2020

"While technology has undoubtedly streamlined many aspects of daily life, it has also profoundly transformed human behaviour. As one of the most significant innovations of the technological era, social media prompts a critical question: has it genuinely brought people closer together, or does it present a facade of connection, concealing underlying gaps or even fostering conflict? Like certain plastic products, social media may appear alluring and seamless, yet it is fragile and superficial."

Step by Step: A Walk to Nowhere, 640 × 356, Sound Visualisation,2023

" The project focuses on the emotional experience people go through when walking. From a psychological and sensory point of view, the project aims to understand how people feel when walking in different materials and environments, and in doing so, find a way to relieve stress by allowing busy people to focus on the walk itself, to be aware of the moment, by temporarily detaching themselves from stress, i.e. by walking aimlessly.

Relying on the sound of walking, the project plans to guide the audience into a state of relaxation or meditation.

So far, the walking sounds captured for this project have come from several various materials, such as concrete dirt paths, grass, leaves, dead branches, gravel paths, and sand. The collection sites are a mix of more lived-in locations, around Elephant and Castle in London, and more naturalistic sites, such as Richmond Park.

Adobe Audition and TouchDesigner were used later in the project to clean up the audio and visualise the sound. The visualisation outputs range from footsteps on natural materials such as grass and wood, to more subdued materials such as sand, to more artificial atmospheres in industrial environments.

Due to technical and time constraints, the project currently provides a basic categorisation of sounds and a visual representation of the relevant categories. In the future, this project will continue to visualise and collect more sound data, with the expectation that it can be curated into an online collaborative healing platform that ordinary users can upload to and participate in."
